What to expect

A relaxed, creative day exploring tapestry weaving – from your first stitches to developing your own ideas and techniques. My tapestry workshops are all about creating small works of art that can be mounted and framed. As an artist, I love the freedom of painting with threads – playing with colour, shape and texture to create something unique. Whether you are completely new to tapestry or already have some weaving experience, this workshop is designed to meet you where you are. For beginners, I’ll introduce you to the essentials and take away some of the mystery surrounding tapestry weaving – from choosing a loom and understanding warp and yarn, to exploring shapes, colour blending, hatching and interlocking. If you already weave, you can use the day to experiment, develop your ideas, try a different loom or simply enjoy some uninterrupted time playing with colour and yarn. I’m happy to tailor the day to your experience and interests. What we'll explore After an initial introduction, you can choose a loom and either work from a simple design or play and freestyle. There’s no pressure to produce a particular piece – I want you to have fun! Depending on your experience, we can explore: Looms, warp and yarn choices Tapestry terminology, including sett Shapes and curves Hatching and colour blending Interlocking techniques Using different yarns and textures Developing your own ideas and designs I’ll have samples and examples of techniques for you to try. Looms & materials I have a selection of Mirrix and wooden looms for you to work on, including the 5" Saffron Pocket Loom, 5" and 8" Chloe looms, 12" Tall Loom and a basic wooden frame loom. Trying different looms is a great way to discover what suits you before investing in your own. I provide tapestry needles and a selection of yarns for the workshop, and I’m happy to advise you on where to buy supplies if you’d like to continue your tapestry journey. Your finished piece: From previous workshops, beginners will often create a small piece around 4 inches in height during the day. More experienced weavers may choose to be more ambitious or experiment with particular techniques. Everyone will have a small piece of tapestry to take home – and hopefully the inspiration to continue painting with threads. There will be a maximum of 4 participants, allowing plenty of individual guidance and 1-1 tuition. Coffee and drinks are provided throughout the day. There are cafés nearby, or feel free to bring a packed lunch.
